Outpatient mental health treatment

Outpatient services are offered to both adults and children in a caring and confidential setting at the Mental Health Clinic in Plaza 15 at 1071 Hwy. 15 in Hutchinson, Minnesota.

At Hutchinson Health, you and your therapist will create an individualized treatment plan to meet your specific needs. Your treatment plan will include the frequency of your appointments (whether they’re weekly, bi-weekly or monthly), additional referrals as needed, and goals.

Depending on your needs, treatment methods may include a combination of cognitive behavior therapy (identifying and changing negative thoughts and behaviors), dialectical behavior therapy (practicing mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness), talk therapy and other strategies for managing your mental health concerns.

These sessions are typically 45 minutes long. Our therapists specialize in both individual and family therapy for adults and children ages 5 and up.

Substance use disorder program

Hutchinson Health offers caring, supportive and non-judgmental outpatient services to help people break free from substances and live a healthier, happier life.

Our substance use disorder program is scheduled in the evening, in an effort to maintain our clients’ school, employment and family activities. The program helps clients ages 13 and older, who need intensive-outpatient programing (IOP group), or individual substance use counseling.

Programs and services offered

  • Outpatient one-to-one substance use counseling
  • Intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment
  • Chemical use assessments
  • Screening, Brief Interventions, and/or Referral to Programing (SBIRT)
  • Individualized treatment
  • Client care coordination

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

DBT is a skills-based program that aims to identify negative thinking patterns and push for positive changes in thoughts, behaviors, mood and relationships.

The DBT program at Hutchinson Health is designed for people who have experienced some or all of the following challenges over a significant period of time:

  • Difficulty managing emotions
  • Self-injurious behavior
  • Frequent suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Frequent emergency room visits or hospitalizations
  • Long-standing difficulties in interpersonal relationships

The DBT program at Hutchinson Health aims to balance supportive validation of the client’s current difficulties while also focusing on helping them adapt to life’s circumstances through learning and practicing new skills.

Because DBT is a skills-based program, clients may be given a book that includes psycho-education and worksheets to complete. Homework and diary card completion are expectations for individuals in the DBT Program.

Inpatient mental health treatment

For patients who are experiencing more severe mental health needs, we also have an inpatient mental health unit within Hutchinson Health Hospital. This enables our experienced team of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses to provide round-the-clock care for those who are suffering from mental, emotional or behavioral health crises.

Our secure inpatient psychiatric unit is for adults and adolescents who are in crisis or are suffering from sudden intensification of their mental illness. They are unable to keep themselves, or others, safe. Inpatient care is a short-term hospitalization for people who need acute care for crisis stabilization and psychiatric emergencies.

Inpatient care involves a psychiatric assessment and a medical consultation, as well as a combination of individual and group therapy, coping and life skills education, medication management, discharge planning and recreational activities. The amount of time spent in the inpatient hospital setting varies from person to person. Your care team will talk with you about how long they anticipate your hospital stay to last, and let you know what to expect.
