Genetic counseling
Some types of cancers run in families. Genetic counselors can help you learn more about the genetic cause of cancer and how it may affect you.
A genetic counselor will meet with you to:
- Review your medical and family history
- Discuss appropriate screenings based on personal and family history
- Review genetic testing, including if testing is appropriate, pros, cons and limitations
- Discuss emotional and social impact of genetic testing
- Review genetic test results, provide support and appropriate referrals
Are you in a high risk group?
Consider genetic counseling if you, or a close relative has:
- Breast, colon or endometrial (uterine) cancer before age 50
- Melanoma before age 40
- Ovarian or pancreatic cancer at any age
- A total of 10 or more pre-cancerous colorectal polyps
- Two or more different cancers
- Several family members with cancer
- A family member that carries a known mutation in a cancer causing gene
Infusion therapy is when medication is administered into the bloodstream through an IV. We provide cancer infusions, as well as non-oncology infusions for a variety of conditions. Infusion types include biotherapy, targeted agents, blood transfusions, antibiotics, or medications to treat a variety of conditions.
During an infusion appointment, a patient rests in a chair while one of our certified oncology nurses places an IV to distribute their medication. We provide a comfortable setting for infusions, with options for private, semi-private or community seating. You’re welcome to bring a support person to sit with you.
What you can expect
Our oncology experts include medical oncologists and hematologists, surgeons, physician assistants, certified oncology nurses and nurse navigators, genetics counselors, palliative care physicians and dietitians.
Our board-certified hematologists study, diagnose and treat diseases of the blood. They also work alongside our board-certified oncologists to help determine the most effective infusion therapies to treat cancers of the organs, bones and other tissues.
Often your care will begin with meeting an oncologist, physician assistant or certified oncology nurse. They’re experts on cancer and will guide you to getting the care you need. They may coordinate with other doctors and specialists as needed, so everyone will know your story and work together to create the right care plan for you.
Your care plan may include testing, medication, infusion therapy, monitoring or a procedure.
