COVID-19 treatment and prevention

Learn what to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms, plus discover how you can reduce your chances of getting sick.

Are there medications that treat COVID-19 outside of the hospital?

Depending on your symptoms, age and risk factors, you may be prescribed treatment to help fight COVID-19 after a positive test result.

How can I manage COVID-19 symptoms?

If you have any symptoms that could be caused by COVID-19 or another respiratory illness (like the flu or a cold), you should stay home and away from people who aren’t sick. You should wait to be around others until your symptoms are improving and you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours, without medication.

Getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated are key to feeling better. Over-the-counter medications may help you find relief from your COVID-19 symptoms while your immune system goes to work.

How can I prevent getting sick from COVID-19?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following ways to lower the health risks of COVID-19.

1. Get vaccinated

Getting an updated COVID-19 vaccine each year is the most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of getting serious COVID-19 symptoms.

2. Practice good hygiene

By taking steps to remove germs from your body and surroundings, you can lower your risk of getting COVID-19 and other illnesses.

  • Proper handwashing: When washing your hands, use soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. If you can’t wash your hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60-95% alcohol.
  • Cleaning frequently used surfaces: Another way to stop the spread of germs is to regularly clean surfaces that are frequently touched, such as countertops and doorknobs.
  • Cough or sneeze into tissues: If you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with a tissue (and then throw the tissue in the trash). If you don’t have a tissue, use your elbow to cover your mouth, not your hands.

3. Take steps toward cleaner air

COVID-19 spreads through the air, and it is more likely to spread in crowded, indoor spaces with poor airflow. These are steps you can take toward cleaner air that can make it less likely for COVID-19 to spread:

  • Get more fresh air: Whenever possible, bring fresh air into the house by opening windows and doors, and using exhaust fans.
  • Use your HVAC for better filtering: You can use the filtering power of your central heating, ventilation and cooling system (HVAC) by using pleated filters and changing them regularly (every three months is usually recommended). If you have people over, set the HVAC fan to the “on” position instead of “auto.”
  • Use a portable HEPA filter: A portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) cleaner can capture very small particles, including the coronavirus. By trapping the coronavirus within the filters, it reduces the amount there is in the air.
  • Gather outdoors: If you’re having group events, consider moving them outdoors where airflow is better.
