Your overall health, pregnancy and childbirth goals, and health care preferences, are all factors in choosing the right doctor. And the good news is that you have a lot of options to choose from:
- OB-GYNs specialize in women’s health, which includes providing preventive care like annual checkups, as well as prenatal care and delivering babies. OB-GYNs specialize in high-risk or complex pregnancies and births.
- Midwives also specialize in all aspects of women’s health, but pregnancy, birth and postpartum care are what they’re most known for. Midwives can manage low-risk pregnancies and births.
- Family medicine doctors can provide everyday care and pregnancy care from your first prenatal appointment to the day you deliver and beyond. Family doctors also work with low-risk pregnancies and births.
- Physician assistants and nurse practitioners can also provide everyday and prenatal care. They don’t deliver babies, but they’ll coordinate with other specialists and physicians to make sure you get the right care.
The best doctor for your child is one that fits your family, lifestyle and care preferences. You have a range of great options that include:
- Pediatricians are solely focused on children’s health care, caring for kids from birth to early adulthood.
- Family medicine doctors can provide personalized care for your whole family at any age and any stage of life.
- Med-ped doctors can have dual specialty certification in internal and pediatric medicines, which means they also treat people of all ages – including those with more specialized care needs.
- Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are highly trained and licensed to provide everyday care for babies, big kids and adults, and they coordinate more specialized care with physicians.
